I have had the misfortune of knowing many people recently who are successful and give the impression that their success happened because they are “intellectually driven”, born “smart” and/or the best package. I think too often we don’t discuss failure and this can cause people to give up on their dreams too early at the first sight of failure. I encourage you all to give examples of your failures and how you tried, tried again and succeeded. My examples:
- I didn’t speak English well when I first came to US at the end of 8th grade. I joined speech and debate and was getting amazing English SAT scores in a few years and eventually got into an Ivy League university.
- When I first applied to law school, I was rejected by 14 schools. My guess was it was because I applied late in cycle and I applied again after giving the LSAT again, writing a more heartfelt rather than resume essay and applying early in cycle. I was accepted to more than half of T14 law schools and eventually best business school in country too and ended up earning dual degree.
