I'm in a dilemma.

I'm in a dilemma. I'm in an IC leadership position on a UX team where I'm responsible for the work output. My team has a people leader who we all report to. My team is very small and the expectations on us all are very high to the point of unreasonable. A few of my team are burning out, including myself. There are other teams who this people leader manages that have a full staff and are able to do a lot more. My staff sees this and wonders why. I've done all I could to ask for help, and when told this was not coming, charting out the work visually so people can see the disparity. Several people have remarked about the obvious but nothing gets done. And now this people leader is becoming one of those micro-managers you always read about. I'm fairly certain this leader is getting pressure, but it feels like I am not trusted or supported, and my team certainly feels that way. I am new in this position and it has been very hard, I've made mistakes, but I've also done a lot of good and have learned a lot. But I can't help but think this leader secretly has it out for me. I love my job and my team, but I'm considering looking elsewhere. My industry is experiencing a lull and I'm not exactly in a hot market. Seriously thinking of going to another industry but not happy about losing my pay.

You need to create some boundaries for your team. List all of the asks in priority order, and draw a line at what your team can reasonably get done. Talk with your leader about this shortlist:

    • Are the items you put above the line the same as what they would? If not, what would they trade off?
    • Is this a regular occurrence or temporary?

This creates a structure to discuss workload and headcount.

I would draw out deliverables and build in some rest stops within schedules in lieu of the help that has been denied.

Further I personally would develop ways to rest and step back from work to help shore up my personal life and health. For the long haul, you need to make changes along the way to ensure your success.
