Honestly, I have worked in toxic working environments for years because the pay was fantastic. The only reason I finally left was because I got another offer with better pay. Hence I don’t agree that toxic working environments are “ALWAYS” the number 1 reason great employees leave.

Bad mangers and no promotions after being in the same position for years because management wants to keep you there.

What have you done to manage your career? Do you expect them to hand it to you because your butts' been sitting in a sit or have you built a business case that they can in turn take to their management to help get you that promotion? Too many people blame their managers when it's on them to build their career path. As a manager, I'm not going to spend time/effort and political capital if my team member can't even be bothered to ask for it with the reasons why they should get it.

Honestly doesn’t sound like you’re the best person to manage people

Why because I expect them to take responsibility for their own career path? I put opportunities to expand their skills, exposure to other areas/people of the company in front of them. Work my ass off every year to develop a career development plan and fight to find ways to keep them and the team relevant to the business. But because I expect them to build the business case to help me fight for them, I'm a bad manager? Sure. Exactly what the hell is it you think Managers are supposed to do for you? Or do you think they are just the scapegoats when you don't get what you think you deserve?

It is known that many people leave bad managers, not the jobs. It doesn't mean we don't change jobs, but it's highly known that if your management sucks, your staff will leave.
