Need some input.

Need some input. After a miserable 9 months at a job I should not have taken, I am at the point where it looks like I might have 2 offers. Job A emailed me this morning, asking for references and I should have a decision by Thursday. Job B, I am a tiny bit more interested in and was referred by a friend. The issue there is I had the first interview on 6/30 and 3rd interview last Thursday, which went well and it is unlikely they are interviewing anyone else else . The HR Manager has been extremely communicative. Last email she sent me on Thursday was she would follow up with the team today (Monday) and get back to me ASAP. I should add that the person who I would report to lives in another part of the country and only comes into the office the first week of every month, which would be the week of Labor Day and the next step is an in-person interview. How do I play this? I really want to have all the information before I make a decision and I don’t want to burn any bridges.

I should add I am really torn about which I am more interested in. Both are very good opportunities

There is no play until there are firm agreed upon offers in hand. Trust your gut. You will have to stretch out the first offer as far as possible. But do not jeopardize an offer relying on a second offer that may never come. As a rule one offer will clearly win in terms of overall offering details.

Thank you. I know I don’t have anything yet, but this is giving me a lot of angst.

You are creating angst over something that will be vastly different than you imagine.

Be really careful about dismissing a firm job offer for a potential job offer that might or might not pan out. Since opportunity B has a friendly, helpful HR contact, it might be worth reaching out to her if you get a firm offer from opportunity A. But keep in mind that there are a lot of applicants for most positions and employers are often not giving people a week or two to consider anymore. They are pretty quick to pull the offer and go to their 2nd choice candidate, so balance that carefully.

Wait until you have a everything in hand. Who cares if your boss only comes in to your office once a month. You never ever have to give a resignation in person. once you know for sure you have a job, you schedule a meeting with your boss via teams, zooms, whatever you use and tell them you are resigning. Put copy of your resignation in the chat of the meeting as well as send a copy via email.

Congratulations. 2 potential jobs is a great feeling.

You may need to move the needle a bit since technically you don't have any offers.

You can look online for recommended phrasing, but if you haven't already, it's likely time to politely nudge the employer to get you on their radar.

You can find words to say either that you have another offer or another employer is moving you down the decision pipeline and you want to be sure that both jobs are at the same point. The employers that want you will hurry up. The one who is fine letting you go, will let you go. It is a risk, but it will let you know (and you never know what the result will be).

Stand in your power and choose how you want to move forward. You can either wait or nudge.

    Good luck.

Wait until you have both offered in your hands and then decide. Easy peasy. It’s so funny for every job I’ve had in the last 15 years I’ve had the same problem two at once! Good luck!

HR from B. Hasn’t been able to debrief with hiring manager. Basically not going to hear anything until after Labor Day. If I get an offer from A, I am taking it. She told me her other interview was yesterday and she would call today

Quick update. I am speaking to A this afternoon and am 98% sure I am getting an offer. She told one of my references that “once the deal is done the 3 of us are going out for a glass of wine. I am not even worrying about B because all 3 references who have worked with me extensively feel that A is the perfect opportunity for me. Hopefully I will be writing my resignation letter this weekend!
