I have tried to stagger my interview requests appropriately. I finished up one panel interview yesterday with Company X, and had another panel interview with Company Y today. I am in the process of setting up a panel interview with Company Z which will hopefully be later this week or next (they are slow).
The HR recruiter from Company X already left me a voicemail stating he got an update from the team. I missed his call but I'll know tomorrow whether I got an offer from Company X. I am expected (it was discussed beforehand) to give a verbal acceptance of the offer or not when given. If a verbal acceptance is given, they proceed to reference checking stage. I actually don't like this because it's like I have to commit to them but they didn't finish their end of the process yet.
I know I did well in my panel interview with Company Y today. What should I say to Company X recruiter tomorrow if they give me an offer? Can I give a verbal acceptance but then rescind it if I later get an offer from Company Y? Or what can I say exactly to Company X so that I can get competing offers to review and not have to commit Company X until after reference checks are complete?

Congratulations on slaying your interviews! This is a great position to be in. My advice: Be honest with Companies X, Y & Z.
You are obviously a sought-after professional. Companies expect that you have applied for a variety of positions. They will understand that you will be weighing multiple offers - it's all part of the process.
Are you interested in these positions? If so, tell them so and explain why. Be gracious and open. If they ask you to commit, explain that you are in talks with a couple other companies and that you need time to make an informed decision.
Note how they respond to you. Are THEY open and understanding? Are they offended and pushy? This will be helpful for you decision making process.
Good luck to you!

Thank you for the help. I will tell Company X tomorrow if they give me an offer and ask if I can accept, I will tell them I need more time to think as I'm weighing multiple companies and need some time and let them know after references are checked. I will observe how they react to that.

You're welcome! An ideal employer will want you to feel 100% happy and comfortable with your decision to accept a position. You should never feel rushed or pressured into accepting a job.
I'm cheering you on!

Hi and congratulations! I have experienced this exact situation recently. You can 100% verbally accept and then rescind. If you have two offers, choose the company YOU want!
Very wonderful position to be in.
