Payment as a subcontractor...at our weekly meetings (small consulting firm) we review the work produced and projected. The bookkeeper attends the meeting. If there are invoices for which I have not been paid ( I receive payment when client pays the firm), I typically will inquire if we received payment. At times the firm receives payment, and it is not divulged to us until we see the payment in our bank accounts. At today's meeting, I inquired if we received payment from any clients The bookeeper states " XXXXX (my name), we dont delay sending you payment when it is received". I then said, I am not stating you delay payment, but want to know if we received payments so I can reconcile my records" She then states she will process the payments to us today and will let us know the clients for which we received payments.

Questions for you Ladies who are always so helpful: a) Her comment was a bit snarky and is unnecessary- Do you agree? b) I want to call her directly and have a few words with her on how she handled my question....I am not happy with her response. or c) Take the higher road and drop it because she is a jerk.

Thank you but I see it differently. She never advises us when payment from the clients are received. What's the secret? Some of the clients are delayed in their payment, therefore I do not get paid. I need to pay my taxes and bills so I need to know what $$$ I can anticipate. She should be forthcoming in advising us and so should the owner of the firm. But they are not. Requested information from her... thats how I see it.

I'm on your side! It's her responsibility to keep up and it's YOUR income!!!! I'm a former bookkeeper of small business clients and although it wasn't my personal $$$, might as well be with my work ethic!!!

I'm now a corporate Tax Accountant and it's my duty- and pleasure- to stay on it. While it's a big firm and we have contracted accountants as well, I'm an individual contributor and ecstatic- in a former role as a small business accountant, my predecessor would hide deposits in her stash of papers and then nag clients as past due. You'd be amazed the checks I found when she quit!!!

Exactly.. my income.. Thank you for your perspective..

If you honestly believe you will change the bookkeepers attitude and timing of response then yes, call and discuss. If not, don't call and push. You are not going to school her.

    True.. makes sense

Accountant here, who used to ne a bookkeeper for small businesses: IMO, your question and response was perfect.
I think the bookkeeper had no clue or negligent- which is why she reacted.

I'd stay on her. First take the "kill her with kindness approach " - we discussed yesterday, blah blah blah and I look forward to routine updates- as either you check in (I would) or she does x times a ____

Get this in writing and cc her manager. They work for you!!!!!

Personally, I tend to err on the side of not pissing off people who are responsible for me getting paid.

I agree with Joan and the other who said, "Kill her with kindness." Follow up, especially if you are responsible for collections of past due payments. Explain that you only wanted to know if you needed to contact the company regarding the invoice. Yes, the comment was snarky and unnecessary, especially if it has been brought up before with other employees and/or clients. She should understand the issue of needing a paycheck. Give her a bit of a break. She may be having a bad day and got behind on some tasks, although making sure people get their paychecks on time should be a priority.
