I feel so defeated

I feel so defeated

I live in Syracuse, NY

I had an over-the-phone interview a few weeks ago and it went well, and she immediately sent me her calendar to pick a date and time that would work for me, for a second, virtual interview to meet with herself, the CFO and the VP of PM and I chose the 3rd day. (she said that they had to wait a couple/few weeks to schedule the 2nd one because of the Easter holiday.)

I was supposed to have a virtual interview this afternoon and the recruiter emailed me yesterday saying that she was cancelling it.

Do they realize HOW MUCH WORK goes into preparing for the interview and then they just shut it down?

I don't understand why they don't give everyone a chance.

I just can't wrap my head around this logic.

Does it really matter if you're the 1st one to interview or the 3rd?

They should have honored the commitment.

If this is the way they are, sadly better knowing now....

Your time was NOT wasted-- use the research, work for the next!!

It's all part of the game, for lack of a better word. Perhaps they have financial issues, or poor management. Consider it as a bullet you dodged. Chin up. Your day will come!

  3. Anonymous

So you’d rather go through the interview and then get rejected?

  4. Anonymous

When you prepare for an interview and take it seriously, it's VERY discouraging to be rejected without being given a chance to explain what you'll bring to the role. If I'm not the hiring manager or recruiters cup of tea, fine, but at least let me, as the candidate, try.

They have a certain amount of time and this position is not the only position they are hiring for so they need to be very efficient with their time. It's not personal.

    I am sympathetic.
Last year I had an interview that I had to move back because of a conflict. Had the interview, nice experience, they wanted to move me forward. Tried to book me the same week as a major holiday and it was a little too iffy for me (recruiter contacted me last minute, which she acknowledged!). I asked for a little more time and that was it. She said she'd get back to me and I had to follow up only to get a form rejection.

I get it, they have to keep moving but I really feel your post. It takes time and effort to prepare (and money if you're traveling, dry cleaning clothes, etc.). I am sorry that happened to you.

Was it canceled because they had another individual they wanted to move forward with? Personal reasons of any interviewers (emergencies do come up)? The position was either put on hold or canceled? I'm sorry it was canceled, but I'm hesitant to burn them at the stake without knowing why it was canceled.

I'm not burning anyone at the stake.

I sent her a reply email asking for more clarification, but she never replied back.

She never said that they hired someone else, so I'm going to guess that perhaps something happened with the position.

Take a breath, things do happen and often things get shifted and cancelled. I would suggest you not think about what place in line you are and instead think about being upbeat in the interview and showing them what you have that they need to hire.

    True story.

I once had 3 interviews lined up. The 1st candidate blew me away! I knew this was the candidate I wanted to hire and that there was no point in spending my time interviewing the other candidates. I instructed HR to cancel my two remaining interviews (I got pushback, but I was determined not to waste my time interviewing candidates I would be hiring.) and hired the 1st candidate, who was, and still is, a stellar employee.

Nobody is owed a chance. The logic is there's always someone who's more qualified than you and who is a better fit.

Be thankful your interview got cancelled, and you didn't waste your time interviewing for a job you weren't going to get.

Candidly, there are a million reasons an interview can be cancelled. Just a few? 1) The job was cancelled. Not being filled. 2) The job is being delayed due to budget or other reasons. 3) There is a BIG debate going on between hiring managers. 4) The internal candidate was handed the job. 5) And here is a popular one......The job spec is being rewritten as the company didn't have its act together and released a half baked job spec which had the wrong things in it. I have personally experienced all of the above. My BEST day was when I told an outside recruiter about one company that had been jerking around candidates for 6 months AND I was taking another job.........The company in question had already changed the job spec 2-4 times and had a slew of managers involved in the hiring AKA they couldn't agree on anything or anyone!

Recruiters sometimes go through hundreds of resumes and applications to pass a dozen or so candidates to the hiring manager, who chooses about a third to half of them to interview. From there, every round cuts the candidate pool in half. If hiring managers and recruiters interviewed everyone who applied, they would have no time to do the work they were hired to do. I have been turned down for dozens of jobs that I know I can do, and on paper, I check all of the boxes with what is on the resume. In the end, they pick someone younger, prettier, has more experience, or wants less money than me. It happens to everyone. It's all a part of adulting. Hang in there, Your time and chance will come. Nothing smashes my confidence more than feeling like I aced an interview and was passed over for an "internal candidate" they were planning to hire, but "had to show" they were also considering external ones. Why would I want to drive 50 miles, and spend half a day interviewing and going through all the prep and other nonsense for a job I will never get? Answer: I wouldn't, but that's me. In addition, some job openings get canceled due to budget restrictions or company reorganizations mid-way through the interview process. In that case, it makes no sense to continue with the interviews when nobody will be hired.

Better not to be interviewed first.

They'll see additional promising candidates and as time marches on these folks will be more readily in mind for the position. Also, as the first or early interviewee, the hiring team is less sure of what they want until they DO see more candidates.

I had already had a phone screen with her and she liked me so much that she said that she was moving me forward to the next steps and she was sending me her calendar to set up a virtual meeting with the board. She was very vague and really didn't disclose why she was cancelling the virtual meeting, but if it was because they had hired someone else, she would have disclosed that and she didn't.
My friend in HR said that seeing it was for a non-for-profit organization, that the funding for the position may have been pulled because she didn't state that they had hired someone and the position was filled.

  15. Beverly Molnar

That’s odd and kind of rude that she didn’t explain why.

  16. Anonymous

Thanks for that and a friend of mine that's an HR Director said that, seeing that they're a non-for-profit organization that perhaps the funding for the position was pulled, seeing that it was a new position, because IF they had hired someone else, they would have said that.

  17. Anonymous

It's rude. But they may not be hiring anyone. There are a couple of possible reasons. Sometimes a department loses funding for a position. Sometimes someone is transferred in without their choice. There are rules in some organizations that require them to take internal transfers in some cases. Sometimes they're being extra slimy and trying to collect information about the job market and what salaries people are willing to take. (You don't want to work for them if that last reason is true.) I bet there are other reasons this could happen too. You just don't know.

    Good look on your search!

  18. Beverly Molnar

    Did she say why?

  19. Anonymous

I've had that happen. They went with an internal candidate and just posted externally to be labor law requirements.

I’ve never been a fan of casinos, but when I found myself in urgent need of money, I decided to try https://pinup-casino.bo/. I wasn’t expecting much since I’d never played before, but to my surprise, I won a large amount of money right away! The site was easy to navigate, and the games were exciting. It felt like such a stroke of luck, and it came at just the right time. If you're in a situation like mine, I highly recommend giving it a try—you never know when fortune might be on your side!
