Hi everyone, I’m updating my resume as I look to move from a manager-level role into more mid-level leadership roles (Director/Head of Function).

I’ve been working on a more modern, visually designed version of my resume, and I’m unsure how that’s viewed in today’s hiring process compared to a more traditional format. My questions are:

Do more visually designed resumes help or hurt for leadership roles?

Are there any ATS or credibility concerns?

Is a clean, traditional resume still the safer choice?

I’d really value any honest feedback or experience.

Thank you!

My take, as a hiring manager who has hired for plenty of Director-level and higher roles: a clean, traditional resume is still your best option, especially for leadership positions.

At that level, I’m not evaluating design skills. I’m looking for clarity of thought, business impact, leadership scope, and decision-making. Overly designed resumes can sometimes get in the way of that.

If your work does include a visual component (marketing, product, design, etc.) and you want to showcase it, you can build an online portfolio or include a link to examples of your work. That way, your resume stays clear and easy to read, and your work can still speak for itself.

Thank you so much for your reply! I have always preferred the clean classic résumé. This résumé writer has a lot of awards and insist that this is the way to set myself apart and then it has worked for many of her clients. Thank you so much for your input.
