My company is going through a merger and it is complete chaos.

I have a retention bonus to stay on for 6 months and help with integration, they are evem saying there may be opportunities afterwards, but recently a very good job came up and I started interviewing. I am on my second round of interviews. If I quit I will have to lose the bonus and maybe burn some bridges. Also, I will not be around to advocate for my team. But good opportunities don't just come very frequently. In addition, I have had very frequent changes with who I report to and it is very exhausting. I am thinking if they offer me, I should just go.

You can negotiate a prorated portion of the bonus and no one will fault you. Honestly, your career is important as is your mental health. Always prioritize you.

If you look at it from the perspective that you can take advantage of a good opportunity with a future or be unemployed in six months with nothing to show for it but a bonus, the answer could be much clearer. There is no guarantee of a transfer, and having been through many mergers and acquisitions before, the new companies would rather bring in someone from the outside. How long will that bonus last? Will it support you until you find something else in a tough market? As for burning bridges, this is a new company with most of them not knowing you. Your team are all adults, who likely would do the same thing.

Hello Friend - This is a business decision, and you're the "Business"...I think you know what you want to do - Go ahead & give yourself permission :)

I have a retention bonus waiting for me should I make it to December. That said, I'm not taking myself completely off the market and I know several where I work are of the same mindset. Things happen and I wouldn't want to miss a great opportunity because of this (and, too...given that I am now north of 50 - I know how much more difficult it will be for me to find another job).

All that to say...I encourage you to not stick around solely for the retention bonus...but use it as a negotiation piece for other offers.
