UK: returned from ~1 year maternity leave and placed at risk / redundancy

Hi Ladies, can really use your advice - when you post please let me know if you are in the US or UK.

Situation: I work for a UK Bank and have been on maternity leave (out for 1 year) and I have long term disabilities. I've returned to work (part time remote working).

My team recent budget cuts and I was informed my role is no longer needed (level has downgraded). I've been placed at risk with a potential redundancy in 1 week which means my next role needs to be secured in 1 month.

I have been reaching out to my network and interviewing internally and externally but the market is difficult at this time of year. I am also under various medical treatments and my manager is aware of this.

Legal: I am on UK visa (my husband and 2 children are my dependents) and up for ILR / permanent residency in 1 year. We do not have the option to transfer to his visa so if I cannot secure a new visa, our family is forced to relocate back to the US

Questions & Advise:

I am exploring a downgrade (took 8 years to get promoted to my current level) to stay in the UK to maintain my immigration status.

Should I take the downgrade?

Can anyone offer further tips on UK redundancy?

Should I tell companies I've been placed at risk/redundancy now or at latest stage. I have until Oct to find new visa sponsorship

any other general advice appreciated

US here: Only you can answer this question.

    Can you afford the downgrade?

Why would you want or not want to relocate back to the US? Can you afford the move?

How easy would you anticipate it to be able to find employment in the US, especially if it requires international relocation?

How long can you afford to be unemployed if you move back? Since you work for a UK Bank, it is doubtful that they pay into any US unemployment insurance, so you wouldn't have that to fall back on and probably wouldn't cover repatriation.

Sorry, but I know nothing about UK (un)employment laws/benefits, particularly for ex-pats.

Thank you for highlighting all this - I appreciate it - will look into the US unemployment also for expats.
