Unofficial Promotion on Resume?

Unofficial Promotion on Resume?

I recieved a promotion at a previous workplace that was very small (35 people). It didn't come with a pay increase, but a huge increase in responsibility and scope of work.

I recently looked at my The Work Number report and it's not on there... However, my former manager is willing to vouch for the promotion.

For those of you who do employment verification, how should I handle this? Would you at least give a candidate a chance to explain this or is this just a huge red flag that would disqualify them?

I want credit for this giant promotion but I also don't want to get in trouble.

That really sucks that they didn't give you a raise OR document the promotion. This is why I try to stay away from small companies. Sloppy stuff like this is more common.

I have had a similar situation and I just let them know they can confirm with my former supervisor and all is well. Tbh I wouldn't stress about it too much. Most hiring people I have worked with have given me an opportunity to explain.

Ask your former boss to write a letter of recommendation that includes this promotion and make himself available as a reference. Now be smart and do not give out this information until you are at the point of offer and checking your references. These companies that ask for references and all manner of info before they even interview you are an absolute waste of time and taking advantage of this difficult job market. Get that letter of reference. They are very hard to get later on. Good luck.

Employment verification is really about getting confirmation of employment with the company and dates that you worked there. It is very common for job titles not to accurately reflect the work that you do, and for job coaches to recommend using more descriptive titles in your resume. Consider including your official title in parenthesis following your more accurate descriptive title in case there is any question during the background check. If your former manager is willing to vouch for you, use them as a reference and don't sweat it too much.

I haven't done the verification process myself but I work in HR and typically that step doesn't happen until they've at least already screened the candidate via phone and determined they are qualified/in the running.n More likely towrd the end when they've narrowed it down to just a few candidates (they don't have time to do VOE for hundreds of candidates). Put your promotion on there and include accomplishments you've made in that role and if and when you get an initial interview/prescreen (usually with the HR rep or recruiter first) just ensure you tell them about the increase in responsibility (and make sure you mention things you've done that demonstrate you know what you're doing in that role or talk about what you've learned since the promotion) and let them know that they did not change your title but you're able to provide references if needed.

Don't stress it. If you sound nervous they might worry something is up, but if you just let them know and are confident in your capabilities they likely won't think twice. Recruiters especially have seen over and over people recieve an increase in responsibility without the title and so often different org use titles differently... what might be called a manager in one company could have responsibilities more like a director in another so the title is kinda arbitrary. It is most important that you can demonstrate the capability and understanding.
