Hi all, I need advice.

Hi all, I need advice.

I am looking to pivot out of retail store operations into something less taxing. Don't get me wrong - I have loved my job but I'm currently just physically unable to stay on my feet and work freight for 7-8 hours a day. I've been in retail over 10 years, even co-owned a shop. I'm looking for something that would allow me to stay seated much of the time as I have to use a cane to stand up and walk. I'm currently out on medical leave due to my mobility issues.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

Have you considered being a buyer or manager operations or distribution, logistics or inventory analytics?

I have actually looked into those but just about every opening is in-person and over an hour's drive for me. So, a two to two and a half hour commute. Moving isn't an option. Thank you for answering though.

Have you considered working in non-profit (education, government, social service agencies, etc.). Many of these jobs have positions you can come into with some disabilities and may tend to be more able to provide you with accommodations. Read the job descriptions of positions you would not normally think you are qualified for to see if they make accommodations and if your skills are more transferrable than you think.

Non-profit would be good as I do have some experience in that. I might be able to find something local (I hope) and hope it'll be full-time with benefits. Thanks!

Congrats on pivoting! If you want to stay in retail industry, I would agree with the one commenter below about seeking out other corporate roles within your org that you can transfer your skills and knowledge too.

I would also say don't under estimate your skills in sales, business development, and customer success/customer experience too and perhaps you can look at roles within your corporate org that focuses on developing those strategies. You also have transferrable skills that could also be applied to a different industry too!

Whatever you decide, I hope this insight helps! Good luck to you.

I've actually been looking to see if my company has anything that's WFH since headquarters is located in Illinois and I'm several states away. Only opening I've found so far I'm not qualified for since they're looking for someone fluent in Spanish. Moving to Illinois isn't feasible. Thanks for your reply.

Have you thought about becoming a buyer? Your retail experience and knowledge could be really useful in that kind of role!
