I'm expecting an offer soon for a job that would require a move, and the company will pay for relocation assistance. I don't have specifics about what the relocation package would cover (I will find out if/when I get the offer), but I'm trying to get a sense of what I can expect. I know all companies are different, but can anyone provide some insight into what relocation packages typically cover? This is a mid-level position in technology, and the salary is low 6 figures...

I would expect full pack and move, temp housing stipend or some kind of lump sum and move support through a relo company. NOW, if you're talking to a small company, that is probably not realistic.

Thank you -- this is what I was looking for. It's a very established specialty food brand with over a billion in annual revenue.

It's always structured very differently. You need to have a list of questions if they don't offer details.

No one can but for the company you are potentially going to work for and with.
My advice as well is to find out how much time you have to use it and whether they lump sum you or you have to do receipts. Many large companies Fortune 100 for example use a 3rd party company for mobility. If that is the case you will be dealing with an external resource that will hold your hand.

I've seen in some ads spelled out: "relocating expenses included/not included".
    Ask for specific details

Six figure salary is NOT low!!!

Wait for the offer first. Hasn't happened until in writing

    Agree to wait for everything.

And six figures is not low depending on the location and what the job is.

Low 6 figures meaning closer to $100k - not closer to 7 figures (I wish LOL).

  8. Nicole Rod

I think OP meant it's in the low six figures... as in just over 100K....

    Correct

I think they meant in the low 6 figures, not that 6 figures is low. Like maybe it's $100,000 and not $900,000.

  11. Anonymous

    Exactly - it's closer to $100,000

Expect to learn that if you leave the business prior to the stated amount of time you need to stay you may need to pay them back. Rightfully so. This is a generous offering in today's market, take whatever they provide as a gift, too many applicants that would move on their own dollar.

Make sure that you read and understand and ask questions and negotiate what is being offered to you BEFORE you sign anything. Every company does things differently. Some may have well-established, well-structured, tiered relo programs while some may provide just a small sum to work with. Ours is evolving and is a lesson learned every time. What we are currently doing is giving an individual a budget to work with, outline what it may be used for and individuals are reimbursed as receipts are provided (our relo company manages all of this for us and they have specific moving companies, rental agencies, etc. they work with). Understand that relo assistance provided will (or at least should) be reported as part of your taxable income.

In many companies, the relocation package you are offered depends on the level of the position.

Flat lump sum (to spend however you want) for lower level positions - then more money and additional services added as you move up the food chain including things like paid house hunting trips, etc.

Our relo assistance packages are set out as company policy and there's really no room for negotiation.

Before accepting an offer, get a comprehensive description of their relo package. As others have said, some will include housing location trips, some include packing, and others will only pay for the truck to the new location. My last experience was the latter. I had to do my packing and unpacking, and they didn't include transporting my car, or provide travel for househunting. I also had to use their moving company (they had special rates).

Depends on the company - in some cases there are set amounts depending on the title and reason for move. I.e, you fall into either package A, B or C. And if this counts as part of your benefits/salary package. many large companies will assess the situation based on the above and then THEY have a company they use to move you - and pay that company directly.

Others have a company that will buy your current home and pay you a flat fee which you use to purchase your new home (If you're a homeowner) and pay the moving company directly.

Ask them for a rough outline of what the relo looks like BEFORE you sign a contract.

Relocation packages usually have a range depending on level of position and compensation. At least my company adjusts for that.

Relocation packages vary from company from company. I did a relocation once. My relocation package included: 1) The cost of moving from my apartment to the new location. The movers showed up, packed up everything, and delivered it to my new address 2) Payment of rent for several months at a temporary location at the new work location. I did not use this as I had a new apartment already lined up. 3) Payment to old apartment to terminate any old leases. Again, I did not use this as I was month to month. 4) Payment of closing costs on sale of home at old location. Didn't use this either but it was there.

I was moved from Ft Lauderdale to Knoxville, TN in the mid 90s

They paid for a house hunting trip (1 week with pay and all expenses)

Movers came in and packed my place in 15 minutes lol or so it seemed

packed my car and met the movers there a few days later- took my time driving, they paid for hotel, meals…
