"Great for initial career progression and to build long lasting friendships and mentors, and could be a great long term career option as well, but if work life balance is important to you, I would not recommend it."

"Due to the nature of Bain being client-facing, you're work life balance is dictated entirely based on what case you're on, the whims of the client, and the whims of your leadership team. Many Bain partners/managers care about creating as sustainable of an experience for the team as possible, but it's always within the limits of what's necessary to get the job done for the client. In my 3 years here, I've never been on a sustainable case, but I've heard of a few colleagues that have, but they are rare."

"Bain has created "Women @ Bain" a team which hosts events for women to experience share on their professional careers and how they've handled climbing the corporate ladder, having families, taking time off, adjusting hours, etc. It's amazing to hear how many women have done this and interesting to hear the tactics they've done to do so. "Once you have joined Bain and become a valued employee, Bain takes care of you. They're willing to work with each individual (male or female) to ensure the job fits their lifestyle as much as possible. While there are standard days and hours, managers tend to be flexible about what those hours are, working from home, etc. as long as the work is done. This is very dependent on the type of work you do, but the mindset of leadership staff is similar."

"Though Bain has very open dialogue about how to support women and has great policies in place, there is still a lack of women in upper management and it's hard to get them there and to get them to stay due to the lifestyle demands of the client service consulting industry. You have to make a lot of trade offs if you want to stay, even if you take advantage of their flexible working program, etc. Many younger employees who are male have children and stay at home wives and are more able to fully devote themselves, which encourages some women to leave the company."

"Actual policies in place are great (super long maternity leave, part time work programs) but having a life outside of work or a child while under the Manager level is near impossible and very rare. The lifestyle itself tends to be harder on women than men (more stuff to take while traveling! etc.)."

"It is always going to be a trade-off in consulting: you will need to request home office based cases, which means you will not get chance to pick the industry, manager etc.
In addition it can be hard to be able to commit to leaving at 6PM on a regular basis given the standard number of worked hours (>60/wk) in particular when the employee has not yet reached Manager level. There is always the option of internal case, but that will only be possible for 6 months and will have career progression implications."

"If you make it to a certain level (manager or above), the company is more supportive and invested in you staying. However, if you're in a promotion window, you're in a hard spot since the messaging is if you really want this promotion, be ready to work like crazy for the next year."

"They say the right things about women's advancement, but are not successful in getting women promoted at the same rates. I think it has to do with the male-dominated leadership seeking out people who remind them of a 'younger version of themselves', and male partners being reluctant to express interest in a junior woman's career"

"In general pay and work assignments are standardized across genders, as well as genuine efforts to be more supportive of females in the workplace. However management is heavily skewed male, and it happens that the celebrated 'rockstar' employees who receive early promotions are almost always male. As sponsorship / mentoring commonly occurs within genders, it makes it really hard for younger female employees to find support in upper ranks."

"Men still outnumber women in more senior roles, but there is a very open dialogue about how to support women in reaching these positions. Promotions and compensation are very meritocratic with no gender advantage; however, the long hours and travel can be more of a hurdle for women. There is a strong community of women within the company, which makes the job fun."

"I worked at Bain for a few years and left in 2010. I left because I didn't want to work in consulting anymore - It was a great place, and I'm still close with many of the people I worked with there. The thing I most wish I had known when I joined was that, if you are working hard and showing the intellectual curiosity necessary to become really good at the job, there are plenty of people who will be willing to advocate for you - but they have to know what to advocate for. Don't be afraid to speak up about your career aspirations and goals and about what's most important to you."
