"Gender norms are very different than in the U.S., and the staff does a good job of helping volunteers understand what these norms are before they are sent to their sites."

"Peace Corps can be a beautiful experience, but you cannot assume it is safe and that you will be able to finish your entire service. Many volunteers, especially female, are sent home early if they are sexually assaulted by host country nationals or people that work for Peace Corps as volunteers or staff. The agency is changing the way they approach survivor advocacy, but there is still much work to be done. Required homestays can be yet another issue for volunteers, especially for women serving in the Peace Corps. There have been issues in the past with host family members sexually assaulting or harassing the volunteer that pays to live with them (speaking from personal experience and from Peace Corps data). Yes, Peace Corps is possible for women, and female volunteers make incredible differences alongside community counterparts. But every woman deserves to know the truth before they accept that invitation to serve, a truth that the agency would rather not tell."
