"Your experience largely depends on where you work in the university system. I’ve had great experiences and challenging ones. If it’s important to you to work for an employer that makes a difference, UH is a great place for that. The culture is very traditional, though, so I wouldn’t expect a lot of flexibility with hours (non-traditional schedules) or work location (remote or hybrid work), and very little business agility. Also, there’s no maternity leave—just short-term disability pay (which is an extra cost to the employee), that covers 2/3 of your regular pay and only activates after you use all your vacation and sick leave."

"The emphasis here is way too much on putting in hours rather than achieving results. I observed that usually when employees request flexible schedules, job sharing, and/or telecommuting, their requests are denied. As a result, UH loses talented employees who can easily land employment with other universities. If you care about a good work/life balance, choose your manager carefully because you will want to find one willing to buck the UH norm."
