Need Advice – At a Pivot Point
I am at a pivot point in my career where I want to assist people during the hiring, on-boarding, firing, and down-sizing time of their careers. I have experience managing people, teams and departments during the sourcing, hiring, developing, firing and even down-sizing stages, however, I have not held an “HR” position. How can I move into this area?
Hi, Yvonne! Thanks for reaching out. The key trick with career pivots is ensuring you know what skills from your previous experiences are transferable and being able to tell a compelling story as to why that experience makes you uniquely suited for the new position. You can explain why you're looking to shift in your cover letter and emphasize those transferable skills in your resume. While you're exploring this new career, be sure you're learning as much as you can about it. What are the core skills and competencies required to be successful in the role? If you're missing something crucial, how can you fill in that gap? Is there a course you can take? Who in your network may be able to tell you more? Are you willing to take a more junior role as you learn more about the industry and gain relevant experiences? These are just some ideas to consider as you plan to make your pivot.
Thanks Abigail for your advice, let's connect and collaborate.
