Career Changers!

I'm considering switching from social services to Paralegal in Family Law.

I'm going to cold call some law offices and schedule some informational interviews. What else can I do?

Hey I am actually doing this! I’m in county social services and doing the UC San Diego paralegal program. Absolutely the advice of the last poster is true. You need that cert to get paralegal dollars. Depending on your state’s regulation, you may have several paths to working as a paralegal. Here in CA the best way is a certificate.

Get your Paralegal Certificate asap. This will ensure that your education is in place. Many times if you are hired without the Certificate you will be relegated to Admin duties supporting more senior Paralegals and lower level office tasks. If you hold the Certificate you will train doing a higher level work. Also, the Certificate ensures you will be paid substantially more and the demand for your skills is much higher so landing attractive offers is much easier.
