Need Advice – At a Pivot Point
I am at a pivot point in my career where I want to assist people during the hiring, on-boarding, firing, and down-sizing time of their careers. I have experience managing people, teams and departments during the sourcing, hiring, developing, firing and even down-sizing stages, however, I have not held an “HR” position. How can I move into this area?
Hi there! It sounds like you have the experience to be successful in an HR position but may be struggling to showcase that experience on your resume because of previous job titles. Make sure you highlight those areas in a summary of experience section so that recruiters/hiring managers see your qualifications specific to HR at the top of your resume. I would also write an objective statement of what you're looking for in a next career so that comapanies don't assume you're looking for a similar position to ones you've previously held. Lastly, getting a certification can really help you break into the field. I've never held an HR position but decided to study and get my SPHR certification to verify that I have the skills, knowledge and ability to be successful in a strategic HR role. You may want to look into getting your PHR via HRCI or one of the SHRM certified professional options. Hope this helps!
