Combining Software Development with Charity/Social Work?

I'm currently a software developer doing government contract work, but I've recently realized that I want to work in a job that has a bigger and more direct impact on the world around me. It could be helping the community, the environment, anything. The issue is that I don't really know what options are out there for someone with my experience, other than making websites or security for charities, which isn't really what I'm looking for. I have both technical skills and soft skills, and I'm even willing to step away from software if necessary. I thought it would be good to ask if anyone knew what types of positions are out there that use skills like mine and have the kind of impact and purpose I'm missing in my life.
