ASK-A-COACH: Imposter Syndrome

Feel like you have nothing to show for your work?

3 ways this could be making imposter syndrome feel overwhelming. Mentally Generalizing your work - you put forth alot of effort, hours, and "do alot".. but everything is too much to think about so you mentally group it all together, but do not have specifics to show what you've accomplished. This is like training for a race but you never use a stopwatch so you have no idea where you're at or if you've really improved. To-Do thinking vs. Results Focused - thinking in tasks can help you execute to get things done, but at the end of the day can leave you without considering the results you've created. You are spending more time on the doing and less time on the end result. Undervaluing yourself professionally - if you aren't consistently thinking about or identifying the value of your work, its easy to fall into the trap of thinking "I dont know my value/worth" & "my work isn't valuable". You probably aren't taking the time to consistently identify and quantify the value of your work. Everytime you skip this step, you are missing out on building the identity for yourself that you are valuable, and you have the skills and metrics to show for it. One simple takeaway you can start doing today to break this cycle is every time you take an action, write an end result sentence for it. For example : Task: Emailing customer service & ops teams to get a new account set up in the system. Result : Account set up to get first order in before the deadline. (from there you can add numbers, revenue etc but for todays sake.. keep it simple!) You'll start shifting from generalization to certainty when you start acknowledging the results you're creating, not just effort you exerted.

Thank you for this. Incredibly insightful and eye opening. after reading, I realized this is me. I struggle to explain what I do and the value of it along with what my team does and the value in their work. We are all incredible busy but it's hard to put that into meaningful words. Words cannot express how much your words here and impacted by mindset this morning. Thank you for putting this out there.

Will give this a try. Work role changed so I need to re-focus on the new path management wants.
