Can you expand a bit on this experience? I’m interested in hearing more. Is it you are in an older gen than them or younger gen? I’m considered a Gen X but it’s funny as we are close to the bday boomers. Literally the baby boomers work to live. Gen x and later do a better job of life/work balance.

To blame your increasing difficulty to work a corporate job on a generation is, basically, ridiculous. (I'm a gen X - my work bestie is young enough to be my daughter.)

I'm curious as to what kind of work you do that it seems to have been taken over by millennials. I'm a late GenXer...closer to Millennials than Boomers. I work in mortgages, so my co-workers run the gamut from Boomers to older Zoomers.

I'm not sure it's generational. It could just be you and where you're at in your life.

My thoughts on the above are that the way to the job has changed and it is hard to adapt to. High tech, come and go, no worry about being to work by 8 a.m. strolling in 10 minutes late, etc. The landscape has changed so much in my position that it really is no longer as much fun to come to work. With less than 10 years until retirement, hopefully, I am struggling along trying to do my job and fit into the new way of doing things as best as I can. It's hard some days and I feel the struggle. You used to be a key person at work now you feel like a newbie from the change of the landscape.

I don't think it's generational. My boss is a Boomer and he is a sh*t. The work is increasingly difficult, but that could be due to my role. I am in the C-suite and I manage others.

Work environment- culture/community matters. It may be generational (for you). It may not. The corporate world has been recognized as being increasingly difficult of late.

You may also be noticing a shift in values / direction for yourself or the company/industry. Attune yourself to those observations as well as self reflection. If something is becoming difficult, it can be an opportunity to learn or leave. Explore both options. See what fits for you.

FWIW, I'm GenX too and while generational lingo/similarities may be at play in the environment, there are also other factors that can be uncovered through personality tests, conversations, etc. As a whole, I wouldn't paint a group of people with a wide brush. I understand that after the Boomer generation leaves the workforce, the next largest would be the Millennials. Hopefully HR has some ways for your company to learn about working together.

    Best of luck.

In what way are millennials changing your corporate job? What about those changes are difficult for you?

It is important that people maintain adaptability - the world changes fast, and pushing against that constant/age-old fact is futile.

Here's the thing I've noticed, and I'm not sure so much if it's a result that the Millennials are taking over, though it is something that points to the fact. Go to a company's website -- I'm talking a small to midsized private biz, not a corporation -- and take a look at the photos of "our team". My findings have been 9 out of 10 times, the team consists of people in the same age group -- primarily Millennials and a few GenZ's. They all look the same. It's as if they're only focused on hiring people who they feel won't mess up the photo op. Back when I started working in the 90s, I worked beside people of all age groups. This is something that has changed. I have been out of work since last April. I have gotten job interviews but no offers outside of freelance where I've never even seen my managing editor, it's strictly remote. Every single decision maker has been a woman in her 30s/maybe early 40s. And when I look at photos of "the team" they all are in the same age group. I'm a professional writer, btw, and writing is all about experience. But apparently experience is not as important as "fitting in".
