For Krasnodara Cameron, learning never stopped at the classroom door. It’s been the driving force behind every step in her career. Today, as Manager of Sensory Product Research, she brings together a scientist’s curiosity, a strategist’s vision and a lifelong learner’s mindset to help advance innovation in smoke-free technologies.
Her journey began with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a minor in physics, a classic foundation in the hard sciences. But finding a hands-on research position proved challenging, leading her to spend several years teaching chemistry and ecology in high school. It was there, guiding her students through experiments, that she rediscovered her passion for discovery. A summer research project at the University of Richmond reignited that spark, and she soon accepted a full-time research position there.
From Academia to Industry
Cameron’s thirst for knowledge led her back to graduate school, where she earned a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics. Near the end of her doctoral program, she learned about an opportunity to apply her scientific expertise in industry, an environment that would allow her to see research come to life in real-world applications.
Joining
Altria’s Research & Development (R&D) organization marked a turning point. “In academia, you do science mostly for the sake of science,” she explained. “Here, I could see how discoveries directly influence products and consumer experiences.”
The pace and scale of industry research thrilled her. With access to advanced technology and robust resources, projects that once took years could now be achieved in weeks. Her team’s investment in cutting-edge equipment, such as an automated particle machine used by only a handful of labs at the time, accelerated innovation and turned theories into tangible results.
The Power of Collaboration
Cameron credits much of her success to the diversity of thought and background within her organization. Scientists, engineers and strategists from around the world collaborate to bring new ideas to life. “It’s incredible to see so many different perspectives come together for a shared goal,” she said. “That diversity drives innovation.”
Expanding Her Perspective
After years in research, Cameron began exploring how consumer insights could help shape product development. She completed a training program in consumer research at UC Davis and transitioned into a new role within the Consumer and Marketplace Insights team. The move allowed her to connect science with the human experience behind it, understanding how people interact with products and what drives satisfaction.
What began as a development rotation soon became a full-time position. “I found myself energized by the fast pace and collaboration,” she said. “Now, I get to merge the science I’ve always loved with what I learn from consumers.”
A Commitment to Growth
Never one to stop learning, Cameron recently completed her MBA while continuing to work full-time. The experience gave her a deeper understanding of how science, consumer insights and business strategy intersect.
“I love connecting the dots,” she said. “I’ll always love science, but now I can see how research and insights come together to drive business success. It helps me bring a fuller perspective to my work and to the teams I collaborate with.”
Cameron’s story is a reminder that curiosity can lead to unexpected and rewarding paths. Whether in the lab, the classroom, or the boardroom, she continues to learn, grow and inspire others to do the same.
