Bethany's Journey: Finding Opportunity, Purpose, and Balance in Her Career

A lot can change in 11 years—skills grow, interests evolve, and priorities shift. When Bethany joined Fisher Investments as a Receptionist in 2015, she could not have predicted how much she would grow personally and professionally over the next decade. Bethany's career journey exemplifies the breadth of experience that is possible at Fisher Investments. "I've had a variety of roles across different business units that have all provided me with unique perspectives and helped me grow," Bethany says. Since her time in Reception, her career has ranged from Accounts Payable to the Annuity Group to Private Client Services, where she currently works as an Audit Analyst. Each role came with its own challenges, but Bethany views that as a positive. "Allowing myself to take on roles that may have felt uncomfortable or challenging at first has ultimately given me opportunities to learn and grow."

This internal mobility is one of the biggest reasons Bethany has chosen to build her career at Fisher. "I love being able to continuously learn, and Fisher gives me the ability to do that. There is so much specialization, but so much collaboration as well. There are many opportunities to work with other business units directly, which is not something I've experienced at other companies." 

Regardless of where she's moved throughout the firm, she has been reminded of Fisher's deeper purpose: helping families across the globe reach their financial goals. "No matter what role I've held at Fisher, what I find meaningful is seeing my work directly lead to a positive result. That has looked different depending on what role I'm in. Whether I am helping a client understand their annuity product or creating a new workflow to help our team do their jobs better, remembering the bigger picture of what I'm contributing to helps me stay motivated."

When asked what skills have been most helpful and transferrable across her wide-ranging career, she answers, "Effective communication and listening. Whether I was in a client-facing role or working behind the scenes, being able to communicate and listen has always served me well."

Finding the Right Balance

As Bethany's role at Fisher has changed over the years, so has her role at home. "I hold many other roles in my personal life as a wife, mom, daughter, and friend." As a working mom, Bethany emphasizes the value of finding a company that supports you both inside and outside the workplace. As a mom, that balance is non-negotiable for me, and it's made such a difference in my experience as a working parent."

When asked if she has any advice for other working moms, Bethany's philosophy is simple: "Leave work at work. It can sometimes feel easier said than done, but it makes a drastic difference if you consciously choose to be present when you come home and see your kids."
