Dr. Osyria O. Webster (she/her), manager of value stream management at Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, has had a remarkable career journey. Starting as a dentist, transitioning to electrical engineering, then pivoting to program management, her decision to change careers stemmed from a desire to pursue something she was genuinely passionate about.

“I was at a point in my life where I was not happy. I decided to make a change and do something I wanted, not what was expected of me.”

Webster’s leap was no small feat. “It was a very hard decision that impacted my life and relationships.” However, with the support of mentors at Collins, she successfully transitioned from systems engineering to program management.

We caught up with Dr. Osyria O. Webster to learn more about her career transitions, her daily life at Collins Aerospace, and her advice for other women considering a career shift.

Where did you start your career journey? What were your previous roles and experiences like?

I started my professional career as a dentist. Years later, I decided to make a career pivot. I obtained a degree in electrical engineering. I began at Collins Aerospace in 2017 as a systems engineer. I became interested in program management and started pursuing roles that would help me become an effective program manager. My roles as a project engineer, operations lead, and deputy program manager were all intentional and benefitted me in my current role.

Tell us a bit about your current job. What’s your current role, how long have you been in this role, and what is your day-to-day like?

I am currently a value stream manager/program manager. I started this role at the end of February 2023, leading a $250+M facilities construction project that addresses the growth of the Collins Aerospace business in Richardson, TX. This project spans multiple sites. My days are spent collaborating with my team and our stakeholders, ensuring that all aspects of the project are addressed. I also work on leadership presentations focused on my project. The presentations provide updates on the project's progress and financials. I have a large, complex project, and there is never a dull day.

How have you benefited from the skills/experience you’ve gained in your career pivot/journey?

As a result of my career pivot, I’ve developed excellent public speaking and presentation skills.  In my previous career, I was very shy and never put myself in the position to speak to groups. Now, I regularly speak on panels and present to leaders. I also use these skills when I participate in community service engagements and in other areas of my life.

What do you find most rewarding and challenging about your current work?

One of the most challenging parts of my role is ensuring quick and efficient alignment between all stakeholders to make the best decisions for the project. I feel accomplished each time my team and I work through an issue and find a resolution; every accomplishment is rewarding.

What are your favorite things about working at RTX?

I truly enjoy the people. Some of my co-workers have become some of my closest friends outside of work. Since joining the company, I have been impressed by the company culture and commitment to increasing diversity.

Looking back on your career, what has been your most valuable career mistake?

I do not consider anything in my career a mistake. Things may not have always gone my way or as expected. However, there is always a lesson to be learned in both good and challenging circumstances.

What are your best pieces of advice for other women who are thinking about making a career pivot?

Do it! Trust that you are capable of driving your career. Develop a network of trusted individuals who you can speak with about your career.
