At Toyota, we’re committed to a future of mobility for all. Our people have the power to shape that future, and we believe the best ideas come from diverse teams of all backgrounds. Empowering team members to bring their diverse perspectives to the table is part of our DNA and we're proud to invest in female-focused employee resource groups, learning and development initiatives, and actively recruit women to help drive us forward. From the top down, we’re proud of our commitment to diversity & inclusion and the incredible employees and leaders powering our evolution toward becoming a mobility company.
As an Engineering Specialist, I deliver line support to our production team members in the assembly area. I help problem solve/troubleshoot as well as project implementation. What makes me proud to work here is being able to see how our finished vehicles make so many people happy and excited. Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) is full of some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met and I’m so proud of what we’re able to accomplish! At Toyota, we're also given many opportunities to contribute to and demonstrate the Toyota Way (respect for people and continuous improvement.) Not only does leadership support us on the shop floor, they support our roles in the community. Through our Business Partnering Groups, I've had many opportunities to give back to the state I’m from! One example of this is leading and coaching for the West Virginia University Tech Summer Academy for Girls that Toyota sponsors every year. To me, these opportunities are HUGE for introducing girls to STEM careers. It really opens their eyes to all of the possibilities they have that they may not have otherwise known about.
"The world is changing, and so is the future of mobility. I want to be part of that change, but more importantly, I want to help develop the people who will make the future possible.”
As president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK), Susan oversees a $7 billion operation, which employs over 8,000 people, and in a year, can produce as many as 550,000 vehicles. TMMK is Toyota’s largest production facility globally, producing the Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350 in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Stepping out of her comfort zone — and being a female first — has become a recurrent theme for Susan throughout her career. Prior to her current role, she served as general manager, Production Control Division at Toyota Motor Corporation’s (TMC) global headquarters in Toyota City, Japan - becoming the first woman to serve in this global production role, supporting Toyota’s 53 manufacturing plants worldwide.
A true pioneer inside and outside of Toyota - she works hard to promote diversity in the workplace and on programs that encourage girls in middle school and high school to explore engineering and STEM careers. “Do something that makes you excited. And try something different. If I had never gone into production, I would not be doing what I’m doing today, and I love what I’m doing.”
I began my career working in automotive retail where I learned all of the ins and outs of dealership operations and ultimately fell in love with event marketing. After spending the past 12 years of my career in the automotive industry and wanting to take my passion for automotive and events even further, I was offered the position of Lexus Auto Show Analyst with Lexus overseeing all of the national Auto Show executions. The world of auto shows is extremely fast-paced and much more involved and complex than most people realize. Between working with each of the different Lexus Marketing departments, Lexus area offices, dealers, exhibit houses, third party agencies, onsite labor, contractors, technicians, detailers, and our product specialist team, we take a blank canvas in a convention center and turn it into a Lexus experience. Seeing a vision come to life and being able to directly impact consumer behavior is an extremely rewarding feeling and keeps me inspired across all 60+ Auto Shows around the country. I’m happy to have found my home with Lexus!
I joined Toyota in 2014 as an MBA intern on the media team. My favorite thing about Toyota (besides the people and products) is the ability to constantly grow my skills by working on many different teams. After graduation I joined the Vehicle Marketing and Communications group and made the move to Texas where I launched the Avalon and Corolla minor changes before being promoted to manager. Since then, I’ve had the privilege to launch the all-new RAV4, the #1 SUV in America, including creating this year’s Super Bowl commercial, “Toni”. Our leadership team gave us a big challenge: launch the new RAV4, shift hybrid perceptions, and create something that Toyota team members could feel proud of. We were able to achieve these goals and more! Toni Harris, the star of our ad, is an inspiring young woman who will do big things in life. Let’s go places!
