"While generally good at demonstrating workplace flexibility, there is much that could be done in allowing more roles to be fully virtual. Many allow some work at home options, but still require the employee to work within commuting distance to a corporate location. That's not as flexible as it seems."

"Great place to work for parents. Excellent parental leave.
Kind but phoney culture. Promotions and high visibility projects typically stem out of relationships. You need to know how to manage up and retain senior leader sponsors who notice your work if you want to advance your career. If your MO is “I stay out of politics” then you can have a fine career here and be treated with kindness and respect, but you will likely not advance even if your work product is excellent. "

"I would set expectations that they would not be heard or validated. That the culture doesn't support collaboration, it supports competition. Women are regularly thrown under the bus in meetings and nothing is done at any level of management to address the issue. "

"This is a very family friendly company, and if you are willing to play the politics there are some opportunities for development. The company cares about equality, and walks the talk.
However, to any employee: don't mistake that a big friendly corporation like this one won't do the typical corporate dirt. They do layoffs periodically and change internal organization all of the time. This is not a place for everyone to retire."

"Most managers are coached to be supportive. It is part of the Amex culture. Just watch out for any managers who are more interested in politics than in leading you. This goes for senior management too."

"The company has thoughtfully put in place policies (such as the 6 month maternity leave benefit, flex-time) that will help retain women (and men, by the way!) they've hired. However, it's hard to move up in the organization without sponsorship so its important for women to find executives who can help them succeed."

"American Express is a wonderful company for women. Although top leadership tends to be primarily men, there are women across the company is leadership positions. It is also very supportive of women (and men!) in terms of a newly expanded parental leave program as well as on site back up daycare."

"American Express as a whole prides itself on being as diverse and balanced as possible and offering as much flexibility as possible. However the actual practice of these values varies by department. My manager is awesome and allows me as much flexibility as possible but that is not consistent across my entire department, which causes significant strife. The company's benefits are very generous - especially the new 5 month paid maternity leave policy in the U.S."

"Amex has a positive, relationship-based culture and recently announced a great new parental leave policy. My one (gender-related) complaint is that there are not as many women in senior positions as there should be given that at lower levels some departments are dominated by women. "

"In marketing, there are overwhelmingly more women than there are men at the entry to mid-senior levels. Amex in general is known for its flexibility and friendly work culture. Compared to other traditional financial services, there are also more female senior leaders (GM, SVPs). However, I would like to see more women at the very top echelon of the company (C-level and Board Members). "

"I've worked here for 9 months after working at a consulting firm previously. There are SO many women here, it is almost overwhelming. My team is currently 80% women, and that is not uncommon. From what I hear, the parental leave policy is strong, and there is a big focus on work / life balance. However, the healthcare plans are truly sub-par and the environment can be very political-- more about who you know than about the quality of the work you do."

"It is a great company, and one you can grow at. However, with the changing leadership and times, the roatating roles that were advertised are much harder to secure, though still prevalent. The culture is very supportive of bringing your "whole self" to work, but it is still hard to manage it all since it is still a large organization with forced curves, etc."

"I worked there for 18 years. When my husband passed away (he was a Mr Mom) the company asked me to come back to work after only 3 days. I hadn't even buried my husband yet. I asked to be part time for a short period of time to help my children transition. I was told I had to come back full time or not at all. I chose my family over the company because they proved they didn't care about a happy work life balance like they always tried to promote."
