"Make no mistake this is a work hard 'up or out' culture which becomes harsher as you get more senior. Generally fairly transparent egalitarian system but I strongly suspect pregnancy/maternity leave/suspected maternity leave have affected promotion decisions and appraisal ratings so be cautious around disclosure of your plans at key times."

"Recently (last couple of years) much improved flexible working policies (work from home, compressed hours, variable hours etc) with a good degree of trust to do your work without watching the hours (mostly because we all inevitably work more!). This is more the case for more senior people (senior manager and above), and in certain departments (e.g. tax)."
