  • Recommend to Women?

Great opportunities for women, equal pay, excellent parental leave, great support during pregnancy/when coming back to work with young baby. Also, many women at the highest levels leadership (overall US CEO and Consulting CEO are women!!). However, the job requires long hours and frequent travel, so not for everyone.

Make no mistake this is a work hard 'up or out' culture which becomes harsher as you get more senior. Generally fairly transparent egalitarian system but I strongly suspect pregnancy/maternity leave/suspected maternity leave have affected promotion decisions and appraisal ratings so be cautious around disclosure of your plans at key times.

Recently (last couple of years) much improved flexible working policies (work from home, compressed hours, variable hours etc) with a good degree of trust to do your work without watching the hours (mostly because we all inevitably work more!). This is more the case for more senior people (senior manager and above), and in certain departments (e.g. tax).

The benefits on paper are fantastic. It is more difficult in practice and application to take advantage.

You can gain flexibility easily from the standpoint that you can often work remotely if needed, with little explanation; however, it comes with the expectation that you should be effectively available 24/7. You can go home to have dinner with you family, but you better be back online and work until midnight after that.

Working for Deloitte Consulting is doable as a 22-24 year old. However, the work is all consuming and takes over all areas of life, conflicting with personal time (mornings, evenings, weekends). The work, clients, and teams are incredibly demanding. You will be gone from your family and friends around 4 days a week. As family committments rise as you age, it would be very difficult to manage work/life balance. I see many women and men above me struggle with this, and work more often than not wins out over family. While some in leadership are understanding, others are not.

Flexibility and Predictability is constantly discussed at Deloitte Consulting. While some project teams and leaders may promote these initiates, others do not. It is luck of the draw which projects and leaders you work for and interact with. During my two years at the firm, I have had one year with reasonable work life balance, and another year with unreasonable work expectations.

  • Recommend to Women?

Every woman has a different definition of what "work life balance" means to them, so for some women, Deloitte Consulting could be a good fit.

There are a number of opportunities available at Deloitte for those who are looking for career growth and challenge. The flexibility I have to work from home and to focus on work-life balance are some of the reasons I stay.

There are a lot of invaluable opportunities at this employer. It's a learn by fire type of atmosphere and being self directed is a huge asset. You learn a lot in a short amount of time. However, boundaries aren't always respected.

The balance IS self guided but the expectations are to put in a lot of time and I felt a lot of guilt whenever I didn't work 13-15+ hour days

  • Recommend to Women?

The consulting brand is very demanding and is for a certain personality type. It doesn't offer much work life balance without putting in "your time" and even then, you're still on the hook for a lot after hours and after client time.

Fair amount of women in higher up management. Current CEO is female. If you want to "work as hard as a man" you'll get promoted at the same frequency!

depends on your assigned client as to how much flexibility you have. I have worked on clients where I HAD to be on-site 5 days a week, and I've been on clients were I work from home 3 days a week

  • Recommend to Women?

Excellent place to be if you want to push forward in your career. Excellent maternity leave, and when returning, you aren't penalized in terms of the type of work/position you return to.

It's very clear that leadership has a family-first mentality. This is a great firm and place to work when focusing on career and/or growing and caring for your family.

In consulting, travel can make things difficult. Also, some practices give more emphasis than this to others (i.e. human capital has more emphasis than technology)
