"If you take a consultancy position, be aware of what you likely will not receive as a result. You will not get maternity or sick leave, health insurance, educational allowances for your children, housing allowances, etc. Your salary will be higher but you'll have to take care of all other expenses yourself."

"This was an informal arrangement. I used my accrued annual leave as my maternity leave."
Would you recommend United Nations to other women?
"I was a consultant within a particular UN program, which is a contractual position accompanied by no benefits. I.e., no maternity leave, no health insurance, no sick leave, etc. The salary is higher as a result but it can be difficult to start or sustain a family under those circumstances. Ultimately, an informal policy arose permitting maternity leave and sick leave in the guise of taking annual leave."

"I would tell her that although there is much to be improved on, the UN is still a good employer. "

"The flexibility is variable depending on the office and who is in charge. I have the luck that my boss is extremely understanding and flexible and gives me all the freedom to manage my schedule, travel, and family."

"The work is incredibly interesting and challenging, and there are definitely opportunities for advancement for women. However, the internal politics and stress from an intense deadline and pressure-filled environment ahead of nonstop global launches and summits will lead to burnout if you're not careful."

Would you recommend United Nations to other women?
"It depends on what role you're in. It is most likely easier to step up to the demands of the job while you're young and therefore have fewer family-related responsibilities, or if you're more senior, whether you have a large team to help disperse some of the work."
