I feel lost. I recently graduated with a degree in writing/communications and have been trying desperately to break into the industry. However, I have continuously experienced obstacles and don't know what to do.I do not have any past professional experience in writing and communications. I am a single mother, so I do not have the luxury of taking on unpaid internships to gain the necessary entry level experience. Also, I am in my 40s and have been told several times that age will be an issue on trying to break into this field. My current job is highly toxic, and I need to quit but do not have a next step or the financial cushion necessary. I have posted my resume and writing portfolio on several job boards, but I haven't had an inquiry yet. I guess I am just feeling lost, disappointed, immense pressure to do something, and an overwhelming desire to move forward but do not know how.

Hi Shannon,
Writing is a broad area, what do you like to write about?
There are lots of writing opportunities to start out writing articles that will pay you per word. Or companies who require writers for their marketing materials ( try LinkedIn)
In addition as a parent, there is a big need for parenting advice amongst working parents. Just some ideas.
Do you have a blog that you can promote or write articles on Medium.com , this is a way to build your audience and create a online portfolio .
Try to focus on the opportunities not the obstacles and keep taking action .
Own your talent and get it out there, put a plan together and take steps each day. Don’t give up on your visions.

Thank you so much, Jackie. I enjoy writing on a range of topics. My passion is fiction writing, specifically in children's literature. I also enjoy writing articles for magazines like Southern Living. I will definitely heed your advice and brainstorm topics to cover. Thank you again

You are so welcome Shannon. Writing is one of my great joys. Just as a point of inspiration, I wrote a book and it became a best seller and that is how I started my business. Don't give up on your dreams and vision. Set an intention and place action. Best wishes, Jackie
