Career Changers!

Seriously considering leaving the mortgage industry.

I accidentally started my banking career in 2001 (temp position that became a permanent job). I started in the mail room, but then started working on HELOCs, then mortgages. For the last 10 years or so I've been in mortgage compliance. The industry is so tough right now. I still have a job, which is more than many in the industry can say, but between layoffs and pay cuts I'm overworked and underpaid. The problem is, I have a hard time figuring out what else I could possibly do, and more importantly how to make it clear on my resume, that my skills are transferrable. I'd really appreciate any ideas.

Hi, do you work in processing mortgages or in a compliance department in the bank overseeing how the business unit processes them? If it is the first, you can move to a compliance/risk area in a bank. It is not a walk in the park either, but skills are transferrable and then maybe you can move to another area in the bank. You could move to internal audit, but again in a bank it can be very high pressure. If you want to completely change industries then you may think about skills such as attention to details, operational processing, etc. Good luck!

I work in the quality control dept of a mortgage company. I've applied for compliance/risk and internal auditing positions at various banks, but so far no luck. I thought moving to general banking would be easier than away from financial industry entirely, but I'm losing hope.

Hi, what is your educational background? To get to Risk or Internal Audit an ABA risk and compliance certification would be very useful. Maybe something to consider.

I just completed my Bachelors of Business Admin. I'll look into certification. Thanks!
