Non-profit consulting

Hi y'all, I'm looking to build my own non-profit consulting practice. I have an MFA, MBA, experience managing marketing and development for arts and culture institutions, and tech marketing experience. When thinking about the help you need, for what reasons would you turn to a consultant, and when would you want pro-bono vs. paid (keeping in mind that you would be able to pay for support)

In my experience at a small non-profit, we generally work with consultants when we are working through a project or transition. Some examples include HR Policies and Financial Management. Regarding paid vs. pro-bono: our consultants generally give us a non-profit discounted rate as they do not focus exclusively on non-profits.

I work in the non-profit sector and the pandemic has challenged us greatly; our constituents need us more, calls to our Helpline are up, donations down, and all programming virtual. We have turned our needs into unpaid internships in categories such as development and grant writing. I am sorry that I can't comment on how we would use a paid consultant because right now budgets are just too tight and there are interns available. But that doesn't mean there aren't opportunities in this space! As part of a national non-profit we don't typically use them but friends I know have in the areas of graphic design and direct marketing.
