Good day everyone!

Im a 56-year old facilities manager in silicon valley, really enjoy my field. I plan to make a move in the new year most likely, as it's just time for a change after 4 years with the company. I've never had a concern about going somewhere else due to age, but now for the first time I'm concerned. Thanks for any advice! Have a wonderful day.

Are you moving out of state? Yes, there are some days I feel confident about myself, and not concerned about the age, and sometimes it is an awful feeling deep down. I am getting a new lap top, and going to brush up on SQL, and learn Python. I can't believe how much of a butt kicking I got over the last 15 years by the companies, and the economy. I'm not a happy camper about that. I think about being my own boss, and then this all goes away. I know it's difficult to get a business going, but I would start a small gig or something to create passive income. this feels so much like 2008 Obama years.

I'm 66 and have found that when I position myself as an expert and narrow my focus, I receive much more interest and plenty of lucrative offers. I can actually retire but choose to keep working as a consultant because of the opportunity available. I removed all "management" and obvious "administration " skills from my resume since these are skills that are obvious. I concentrate on subject matter expertise and experience. I've found that ageism is not really an issue when I position myself apart from my younger peers.

About this group

We went to college in the 90s, started our careers when cell phones were a luxury that came with a shoulder bag and fax machines were the newest tech. Here we are now, in what should be the best years of our career facing an ever changing work culture that sees established Boomers still running the show with Millennials expecting to be the next leaders. Meanwhile we just want to take a vacation, make sure the kids get to soccer practice and fund our 401k.
