Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from real women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Steph Campolito, the senior manager of EUV source training at ASML. ASML is a company that sells lithography machines that provide leading patterning solutions which drive the advancement of microchips — resulting in innovations ranging from the latest cell phones to high-speed cars.

This never-ending innovation is Campolito’s favorite thing about the company. “Change is endless, and it drives the pursuit of excellence and efficiency,” says Campolito. The work can be challenging, but thankfully ASML is there to support their employees and help them find balance by providing the resources they need to excel.

As part of this, ASML is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment. ASML is “a very safe place to just be yourself and bring anything to the table without any kind of scrutiny,” shares Campolito. “The spirit of teamwork and brainstorming is very high at ASML… and we actually have something called a help request.” This is a formal request for assistance — that really works. “It's remarkable,” Campolito tells us. “Folks rally together to help solve [the challenge] all the way through resolution. Then, we follow up on each other to make sure things are going well.” This is only one of many ways that ASML creates a safe environment.

In the video below, Campolito shares more on why she’s loved working at ASML. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.

Can you tell us about your job?

I'm responsible for making sure the service organization has the right training, at the right time and at the right place so that our customers, the chipmakers, can meet their production schedules.

I've been there for about five years, and when I first got there, the department was really quite new and somewhat organized. As a change agent and a fixer, I was able to get to work pretty quickly. As a team, over the last three to four years, we've become a benchmark for the other training organizations in the company… It's been incredibly rewarding to watch the team come together and get all this done with our stakeholders.

Can you tell us about a project at work that you find exciting?

A project that I'm working on right now is expanding our training facility so that we can meet the training and supply demands of our chipmakers. We moved into a center that was really not set up for the equipment that we need to use in training. So, the job is working with facility maintenance and our service organization to make sure that we meet customer requirements.

This includes replacing a crane, expanding rooms, putting in new flooring — which is way outside of my wheelhouse… What I love about it is that I'm expanding my network, I'm stretching my team and I’m creating a partnership with groups I've never worked with before.

We've had some major budget constraints, and we've had hardware and product availability constraints, but we're overcoming them and it looks like we'll finish on time at the end of the year.

How would you describe the culture at ASML?

The culture at ASML is invigorating. If you're a lifelong learner, if you're resilient and if you enjoy solving really tough problems and striving for continuous improvement, then this is a workplace for you.

ASML has a way of really bringing out the best of everybody in collaborating and challenging one another with care… We work incredibly well in teams. Regardless of where you sit in the organization, every voice is heard. I really love that. Our creativity is also very rich, and the opportunities to grow and promote are really endless.

How does ASML support you in regards to career advancement?

ASML does a lot for people who want to advance in their career. We have this program called, development action plan readiness, where we meet multiple times with employees and their managers to discuss what they want to do. One thing I love about ASML is that we take this very seriously. We sit down and take a look to see if their goals are lining up with their ambitions of what they want to do. And [we identify] the reach goal. Let's say that I have an employee who wants to be a manager, then I put them in a position where they can demonstrate those skills, establish their network and create mentorship relationships…

The ambition for me is to set up my team so they can go wherever they want to go. So we're routinely transferring employees and picking up new employees who have skills from their previous role that add great value instantly to what we're doing. I've actually had three people promoted out from my team. So it works, and I love it. It doesn't matter where you are in the organization, either — this benefits everyone.

What advice do you have for women looking for jobs at ASML?

My advice for women who want to work at ASML is to not be intimidated by the size of the company, the richness of our technology and the sometimes tough collaborative environment.

I'd urge them to come in and focus on their knowledge, their skills and the experience they bring to make a difference every day. Just come in and do your job, and the rest will take care of itself.
