‘I Love My Job’: How The Hanover Supports Me

Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Meggie Garcia, who has been in the insurance industry for 18 years and is currently a product manager at The Hanover Insurance Group.

Garcia is also the co-chair of The Hanover’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) business resource group (BRG). Here, she shares that she’s excited to lead “a group of amazing people who are as passionate as I am about bringing cultural awareness to The Hanover.” The AAPI community makes up a smaller percentage of the overall insurance industry, so “it’s really great to be one of the leaders at the forefront of expanding awareness,” Garcia tells us.

Can you tell us about your career journey at The Hanover?

I joined The Hanover as a senior middle market underwriter and, nine months into the role, an amazing opportunity for a product management role opened up that I had wanted to try.

I got approached for the position based on my expertise for human services, educational institutions, and nonprofits. I was offered the enterprise role for a project that they were working on, and I thought it was really neat that the company recognized my experience and my expertise and offered me the position.

How would you describe the culture at The Hanover?

The company is a really close-knit team. It's been three years [since I joined], and I still feel that way. I think this is attributed to our CARE values, which stand for collaboration, accountability, respect, and empowerment.

I see the CARE values in action every day, which is really inspirational. Everyone, including myself, embodies these values. That's what makes me happy to stay at The Hanover.

What is your favorite thing about working at The Hanover?

There are so many things. It's the culture with the business resource group, the people, the benefits, the transparency, and the work-life balance, too.

How does The Hanover support you?

In addition to the usual benefits, like a 401(k) and stock options, three of the coolest things about The Hanover are:

1. We have multiple venues for education. In addition to the business resource groups, we have our own portals where we have opportunities to get certificates. And even within each of the business units, you can get specialty certifications or general education.

2. To assist with work-life balance and overall employee wellbeing, we have access to a free online solution offering a variety of on-demand programming dedicated to mindfulness and resiliency, in addition to other wellness initiatives like walking events.

3. We have a company-wide mentorship program called the Grid. I got to help create and pilot the program. It is such a neat program that tries to match people with what their goals are, what they want to learn, and what department they want to be a part of.

What advice do you have for other women looking to work at The Hanover?

Be yourself. The company really understands that you are someone who wears many hats: you can be a mother, a wife, a single mom, a volunteer for a nonprofit, on the board, or a pet owner. That's one of the amazing things [about The Hanover Insurance Group] — we want to know about you… So, just be yourself and ask the questions that are most important to you.
