AppNexus is an incredible place to work for women. We still have some work to do, but the commitment to D&I from the top down and overall culture makes me really proud to be here.

I believe that the company truly is committed to making this a great place for everyone to work at, but you often have to fight to be seen and heard — especially if you aren't at the New York HQ.

Workplace flexibility varies greatly depending on your manager, or your manager's manager. This seems unfair because it means not everyone experiences the same level of flexibility — I've experienced both quite flexible and not flexible at all.

Don't be afraid to ask for what you want, or to speak your mind in meetings, there are a fair number of women in leadership positions who would gladly join you in a meeting to help amplify what you are saying or observe and give you feedback.

Maybe. I think AppNexus works hard to hire diverse talent. As you work your way up and gain some seniority, it is extremely hard to see your compensation even remotely keep up with your market value, or the work that they ask you to do.

The inequality at AppNexus is super team specific, I've had awesome female mentors and there are teams that have a great culture, but my professional experience has been very negative, especially when it comes to gender equality. I'd caution women applying to AppNexus to make sure their direct manager is an advocate and their team is known as a supportive one. I'd also keep in mind that AppNexus reorganizes frequently, so be prepared for a bit of career roulette. You can potentially develop here, but there are places in the organization where the only promotions and pay increases go to a very homogenous group, I'd be wary of this before you accept a position.

Very flexible overall with work-life, but not very receptive to any commentary relating to improving current state. There's a very strong feeling of AppNexus being amazing at all things related to diversity and inclusion and this attitude can often get in the way of making additional positive changes.

AppNexus largely is a woman-friendly environment. Leaders are doing more to promote women into leadership positions and ensure equity across the board. There are certainly still some people who don't "get it," but speaking up and calling those folks out is encouraged.

Overall the company values work-life balance, flexibility, being inclusive, hiring fairly for diversity, training on unconscious bias, etc... and they talk about it A LOT. Unfortunately, there are sometimes individuals (ex: engineering managers) who seem to ignore this and don't attend the offered training because they don't view it as a part of their job description.

Even though the high-level culture promotes flexibility, but sometimes I feel like my team members don't understand the flexibility I need for daycare, child's sickness, pumping breast milk, etc. I feel like they view me as a slacker for needing that flexibility.

  • Took Maternity Leave Here? (Weeks)

    12 paid / unpaid

Paternity leave is only 4 weeks, I would like to see paternity leave equal to maternity leave (12 weeks). Ideally, both would be longer than 12 weeks because I was not prepared to return to work that soon. The company does seem flexible with some employees to allow them to work from home with a nanny or other caregiver so they can breastfeed throughout the day or whatever they need.

I think it's very team dependent on whether you feel included as a woman or not.
