Upper-level management is a boy's club. Associates are paid minimum wage and there is a high rate of turnover, causing a stressful work environment among managers. Work-life balance can suffer as you always need to deal with staffing issues on your days off.

Women at times seem to be treated a bit differently than male counterparts. Not in a "bad" way, but just different.

Women who actually make it in management will stifle older employees who might otherwise be able to advance

Look for better talent to help you do your job. Do this early in your career or you will be the person who does everything. It gets harder as you get older and upper management could care less how many hours it takes, as long as the operation keeps running.

Work hard. Real Hard. Don't take a retail job if you don't want to work hard and don't expect to have off every holiday and weekend. Be prepared to work nights too. Whenever your DM asks you to help out at another store, go. Do whatever you can to be a team player and you WILL Succeed!
