      "We need you. We want you to know you are welcome here, and there are many opportunities to be recognized. This has been one of the most open companies I've worked for. You will work hard, and there are some inefficiencies that need to be corrected, but as a global company in a relatively conservative field we are extremely liberal in our internal culture.       "First, build relationships and do not burn bridges if you want to reach the senior most ranks. As big as the company is, the top senior leadership group is actually small. And although performance is critical always, having great relationships are just as important. Second, build mentoring relationships, and don't limit your mentors to people who look like you. There are many great people in this company who want to be mentors and allies - you can find somebody if you look for them. Lastly, as an aerospace and defense business, this company is still somewhat male-dominated, but SERIOUSLY making progress. I wouldn't still be here if I didn't see evidence of that."

      "Over the past few years, there has been a shift in the culture. There is a greater focus on flexibility in scheduling and work environment as well as overall focus on the employee experience.       "The employer did not allow use of software tools that would have streamlined the work, thus, I was forced to work overtime just to get the basic work done. The employer HAD ALLOWED the previous person in my position (a man) to use tools to streamline the work. They ordered me to re-format and decommission the administrative computer that had ALL of the tools on it to make my job efficient, and then blamed me for not being efficient!!! Horribly discriminatory. "

      "While the overall atmosphere often feels corporate and stuffy, I have so many strong female leaders to look up to in this company. I also love how much UTC encourages ongoing learning: they are fully funding my current masters degree and might even fund another. This is not a "hip" office environment with fun benefits like free gyms or lunches, but the benefits are solid and flexibility is EXCELLENT. I have never had work-life balance issues here. My one note is that if you wish to see significant changes in your pay, you need to be a truly exceptional employee and need to document your successes in order to advocate for raises. Yearly merit increases themselves are very small, so if you want to make money moves, you truly need to be proactive."

I was impressed since many companies only allow family leave (unpaid) and only provide some sort of paid leave to women who have a bay."

There's a zero tolerance policy on sexual harassment or gender discrimination, but I don't even need to deal with that because I haven't had a single instance where I came close to that.       "There are many people supportive of the needs of women and men that need flexibility for family. Not every job can have as much flexibility and that's ok - but there are plenty of jobs that do allow for flexibility. When I had my first child, I took 6 months off, I came back part time .       "I think UTC has made strides in gender equality, women in leadership, and fair treatment of all employees. As a female in tech, I have never felt like I have been passed over on opportunities due to my gender. I truly believe this company focuses on who is the right person for the job, and ensuring all employees are working on their development. While many people may point and say "look there are not that many female executives in the technical disciplines" but the truth is - it is not disproportionate to the percentage of women with the experience to lead in such high roles.       "The manufacturing / engineering industry is predominately male dominated industry, as is our company. This is also a very conservative culture but striving very hard for inclusion of all types of diversity. It is not easy to find a mentor and, as women, we tend to be paving new paths every day here. If you are persistent and willing to work hard to break through "norms", there is great opportunity at UTAS. I started my career as a secretary and was able to obtain two degrees (paid for by UTAS), travel the world, work part time and nights (while my children were young) and now hold a leadership position. Not easy - but very possible!!"

      "There is significant opportunity for career growth, and movement within the corporation. However, the gender gap still exists primarily within the engineering discipline. Expect to have to fight for the same treatment as men in similar roles. Also be prepared for the stereotypical judgment to still exist where strong and aggressive women are consider "emotional".       "It depends on the department and the business unit within UTC. Typically in Operations, it is a heavily male-dominated area. Most of the time it feel's like a "boys' club". Most people are respectful, but you do have to have a tougher skin when you're the only female out of 30 men on your team. Choose your manager wisely.       "Say "sorry" only when appropriate, not often. It is important to claim responsibility, but a more effective approach would be to follow it up with course of action to mitigate the situation. I see women default to say "sorry" before their male counterparts, and many times when no one is even at fault. I work in a male dominated environment and luckily most have been respectful. Nobody likes to be at fault and it doesn't help to preemptively accept blame. Providing solutions and executing actions is one of the many ways to progress."

      "All of the people who are fast-tracked (e.g. promoted every two years after having started as an E1) are men. I don't know of a single woman who has been fast-tracked. The vast, vast majority of E44s and E88s are men. In the area where I sit, only four women have offices (i.e. only four women are an E5 or an E6) whereas at least 23 men do. The vast majority of women where I sit have been mommy-tracked. Nepotism is absolutely rampant. Most of the people I work with are related to someone else who works at the company. If you are the child of someone important or some higher-up is a family friend, you will get special treatment."

      "Raytheon gives the appearance of treating women fairly, but they do not do this. Only caucasian women are treated slightly better of than all women. I have close to a 30 year career at Raytheon in El Segundo, CA. I have seen men always promoted over women. It has gotten to the point that a caucasian male (age in his 50s) with no college degree what so ever was promoted to lead a group. Every single person in his group had at least one college degree with many having advanced degrees. Normally, a person in his position would be required to have a college degree. This male is working on his degree (online via an east coast school) in order to have all the prequisistes needed for his job. While he is based on the west coast, he will never set foot on a college, but at some point will have a college degree. Infractions of every type are looked the other way for men. Women are scrutenized for everything we do. Pay inequities exist in every position. The only way Raytheon can prove it does not exist is by publishing salaries which it will never do. Publishing salaries will expose the lie. Ethics is non-existent in the company. Raytheon gives lip service to it, but does not act on it. Raytheon now has an initiative to only "interview women or people of color" for upper level positions. The key is only an interview needs to occur, but you don't have to hire that person."

      "I have worked here for 3 years, first on a team where I was the only female and now on a team of all females. When I was the only female on my team I was constantly told that I only got my position *because* I was female and the team needed to diversify...it didn't feel great. Now I work on an all female team and it is very different. We are all given ample opportunity to succeed and progress, and also the opportunity to arrange our schedules around our family life. The company is overall a good company, but like any place else your manager and your team make a huge difference."

      "I have worked here for several years, the CIO is a female but most other managers are male and I am constantly told that I was hired because I was a female so my team would look good to the CIO. It makes me feel like I have no value other than my gender and I am frequently passed over for training and good projects. I will say that sexual harassment is absolutely not tolerated, but these more subtle forms of discrimination seem to be ingrained. A female exec recently had her 3rd child and the men in my group talked non-stop about what a waste she was in that position because she was too busy popping out babies to do her job. I am trying to get on a new team working for a female boss in the hopes this will improve my work environment because I do think this is a good company with many opportunities but I am just in the wrong spot. "

      "I work at a wholly-owned subsidiary of Raytheon. Acquisition by Raytheon has had a negative impact on our overall benefits, but work-life balance can be very good, if you hold your boundaries well. There are relatively few technical women but that hasn't been a particular source of problems in my personal experience."

      "I was very lucky to be in a very supportive group where I was able to learn and grow. Further, my supervisors were very supportive of giving me challenging assignments, and seemed to be really flexible with me as long as I got the work done well. The down side for the industry as a whole is that it is very old school, and very much an old boys' network, this can make it very hard to be taken seriously."

      "Women are a minority of the technical staff (which is the majority of people). The number of women varies by department. The company is making a effort to investigate whether women are treated fairly, and to improve subtle things that are a problem for women, but it's not totally perfect. Work/life balance is good, and you can fairly easily go back and forth between part-time and full-time. You will still occasionally run into ridiculous incidents of sexism, but it's not common and generally not conscious."

      "I've worked here for about five years. The company talks about promoting and empowering women, but the management structure is increasingly male dominated. I have found supportive female confidantes and mentors, but felt a lot of pressure to return early from maternity leave in order to not be "mommy-tracked" - which I did, and deeply regret. I also have detected that males tend to out earn females and don't seem to work as hard to prove themselves. Coming back from maternity leave was tough. They have "mothering rooms" to pump, but these are overrun to the point that I called HR to complain that after 7 hours of waiting, I was going to use a public restroom to pump (which is illegal). Days later I received a voicemail from HR informing me of the overrun mothering rooms...sigh. It's hard to build a network with the boys club feel sometimes, so I just do my best. Raytheon does offer flexible scheduling, but works its employees very hard and expects a level of performance that generally cannot be accomplished inside of a normal work week."

      "It's a large company, so it's entirely dependent upon where you are and what you're doing; engineering is a challenge, it's a union manufacturing house, and still is pretty stuck in 70's in that regard."

      "Most women who worked at my site (Fullerton, CA) were in support roles, such as Administrative Assistants or Configuration Management. It's very much an old boys club and sexual harassment is an unreported problem. Most women tolerate it because the HR Department was so ineffective and because of the rampant nepotism, no reporting was anonymous and retaliation would ensue. The only time you are listened to is if you are showing off a visible rack. I was not promoted until a friend (who was in a support role and had visibly huge breasts) told my manager it wasn't fair that I was passed up in favor for a guy who didn't work as hard and was not there as long as I was. My boss (a married man) had a crush on her and decided to please her by promoting me. It's hardly a meritocracy. When I worked there, I was a single woman with no children, so I can't speak about motherhood there. There were women who had kids and worked there as engineers, but their husbands also worked at the site and their husbands' employment acceptance was contingent on their wives also getting a job there. Lots and lots of nepotism, everyone there was someone's kid, mother, father, wife, husband, etc. If your family member works there and has worked there for 15-20 years, you will be ok, otherwise, you will be battling the "in" crowd as much as being a woman in engineering. I cannot say if this is a problem at other sites, just that it was a problem at the Fullerton, CA site. I know women engineers who work at the El Segundo, CA site and seem to enjoy it."
