Until fairly recently, most self-love advice seemed to be coming from men, and it often sounded as if they were often talking at me, not to me.  So, I started collecting advice on self-love, self-esteem, and self-affirmation – from women, to women. The quotes sound different to me than the advice from men. They sound more empathetic, empowering, encouraging – and ring true!

Like laughter, self-love is best shared, and we can all use reminders to be our own best friend. I have printed a few and posted them on my bathroom mirror.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from writers, actors, musicians, politicians, and designers, all women, including one from my mother and one from me. Which one is your favorite?

1. “Be who you are, not what the world wants you to be.” - Coco Chanel

2. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."- Eleanor Roosevelt

3. “I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my very life depends upon self-love and self-respect.”- Maya Angelou

11. “Finally, it occurred to me, I'm either going to love me or hate me. And I chose to love myself." - Queen Latifah

12. “One of the greatest regrets in life is being what others would want you to be, rather than being yourself.”-Shannon L. Alder

13. “Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation.”- Diane Von Furstenberg

14. “Do your thing and don't care if they like it.” Tina Fey

20. “The only cure I’ve ever known for fear and doubt and loneliness is an immense love of self.”- Alison Malee
