About this role

Your team

The Enterprise Resilience team manages BlackRock's business resilience programs, helping the company prepare for disruptions and disasters. Within Enterprise Resilience, a small technical group develops applications and services used by the team.

Your role and impact

We are looking for a full-stack, AI-native software engineer to join our group. This role will be based in our Edinburgh office and managed remotely from San Francisco. The successful candidate will bring strong curiosity, excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in modeling interdependent systems.

Most of our existing services are written in TypeScript, with a technology stack that includes Prisma ORM, Postgres, Fastify and React. We therefore prefer candidates who already have experience working with full-stack

TypeScript/Node.js. However, we are happy to consider candidates who are proficient in other typed languages - especially if they have experience in other relevant areas (see below).

Your responsibilities

In every role at BlackRock, you'll be expected to apply sound judgment and critical thinking to solve complex problems, adapt as the business evolves, and combine the curiosity to explore new approaches and technologies with the rigor to challenge the results. The scope of this role also includes the following responsibilities:

Collaborating with Enterprise Resilience colleagues, you will:

  • Use coding agents to develop secure, scalable software in support of business goals.
  • Develop scheduled jobs, data feeds and automation to support day-to-day resilience planning.
  • Develop software that models BlackRock's business dependencies and simulates disruptions.
  • Help develop agentic AI tools that let stakeholders easily interact with their data.
  • Fix bugs, help colleagues, build relationships with stakeholders and develop a keen understanding of business resilience.

Your experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional full-stack software engineering experience.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills: able to evaluate evidence objectively, think critically, and propose rational solutions.
  • Strong AI agent management skills. A good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of AI coding agents. Comfortable prompting, managing and verifying the work of agents.
  • Refined creative instincts. Leverages AI to generate polished user interfaces aligned with a design system.
  • Excellent written communication. Uses AI as a technical resource, not as a ghostwriter.
  • Experience using relational databases, either via raw SQL or an ORM. Comfortable analyzing, cleaning and reshaping complex relational data.
  • Proficient in standard aspects of web service development, including user authorization, caching, API design, database schema design, and testing.
  • Familiar with standard development practices, such as source control and command line use.
  • Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills.
  • Storytelling skills: can build a narrative and keep the audience engaged.

Preferred

  • Experience modeling interdependent systems and how disruption propagates through them, for example graph-based dependency analysis or time-stepped simulation.
  • Background in a domain that involves systemic modeling, such as industrial ecology, epidemiology, systems biology, statistical physics, supply chain management, traffic simulation or utility network modeling.
  • Full-stack TypeScript/Node.js experience.
  • Experience with the React front-end framework.
  • Some product management experience (can be informal).
  • A sustained interest in generative AI, with experience making agent skills or tools.

Nice to have

These aren't deal breakers, but we would love to hear if you have experience with them.

  • Experience building games, game mods or simulation engines, especially strategy or simulation games with many interdependent entities.
  • Experience with business continuity, operational resilience, or civil disaster preparedness.
  • Experience working with geospatial data.
  • Experience developing agent harnesses or building services that use generative AI.
  • Prior experience interacting with the Salesforce platform.
  • Hobbies or projects that demonstrate the candidate's curiosity.
