June is Pride Month. And as celebrations and parties happen throughout the country to celebrate members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQA+) community and their right to love, it’s important to remember the various forms of discrimination that they still face. For example, employment discrimination against members of the LGBTQA+ community is still prevalent in many states, and people can still be fired due to their sexual or gender orientation.
In fact, there is no nation-wide law that protects individuals who identify as LGBTQA+ from employment discrimination, either under state or private sector employment; you can be fired for being lesbian, bisexual, or gay in 28 states, and you can be fired in 30 states for being transgender.
These and other statistics reported in Out and Equal’s 2017 Workplace Equality Fact Sheet, like the fact that “one in four LGBT employees report experiencing employment discrimination in the last five years” and “nearly one in 10 LGBT employees have left a job because the environment was unwelcoming” support the need for more workplace policies that offer support to gender and sexual minorities.
However, there has been some more encouraging progress being made, with Fortune 500 companies welcoming 92 percent of lesbian, gay, and bisexual employees with inclusive policies, that protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation, according to Out and Equal.
Evidence of this progress for inclusivity in the workplace can be found in Logo TV's ( a cable television channel that caters to LGBTQA+ audiences) second annual list of “Top 25 Trailblazing Companies” which is a roundup of 25 companies that have made strides in creating inclusive advertising, policies and representation for members of the LGBTA+ community. The list matters because workplace climates that offer supportive policies help to lessen discrimination and offer safe spaces in which LGBTQA+ employees can earn a livelihood. As reported by Out and Equal, these safe work spaces “are linked to greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction, improved health outcomes, and increased productivity among LGBT employees."
